LSM BSR — Firmware Update Guide
This guide explains how to update your Lone Star Marine BSR electric fishing reel using the LSM BSR iPhone app, starting from a firmware bundle you have already downloaded from bigsmartreels.com.
About Firmware
Lone Star Marine ships firmware updates as a single bundle file with the .lsmpkg extension. The bundle is a drop-in package — you don't need to think about what's inside it; the app applies the right pieces to the right parts of the reel in the right order.
| What you receive | File extension | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| BSR firmware bundle | .lsmpkg | Everything the reel needs — single file, single import. |
Before You Start
- iPhone or iPad with the LSM BSR appm installed (from the App Store)
- The firmware bundle ( .lsmpkg ) downloaded from bigsmartreels.com and saved to your device
- Your BSR reel powered on and within Bluetooth range (5–10 m)
- Reel battery at least 50% charged
Important: Do not power off the reel or close the app during a firmware update.
Interrupting an update can leave the reel in a state that requires recovery.
Step 1 — Locate the Downloaded Bundle
After downloading the .lsmpkg from bigsmartreels.com, the file is saved to your device's Downloads folder by default. You can find it in two places:
From Safari
- Tap the Downloads icon (downward arrow) at the top right of the Safari address bar
- Tap the bundle name in the list
From the Files app
From the Files app
- Open the Files app
- Tap Browse at the bottom
- Open On My iPhone (or On My iPad) → Downloads
- Find the bundle (e.g. bsr_145_v12_nrf74_2026-06-05.lsmpkg )
Step 2 — Open the Bundle in LSM BSR
The fastest way: open the bundle directly into the LSM BSR app.
- Tap and hold (long-press) the .lsmpkg file
- Tap Share
- Tap Open in LSM BSR (or Copy to LSM BSR)
- The app opens with the bundle already loaded — skip to Step 4
Don't see "Open in LSM BSR"? Open the LSM BSR app and use the Import button
described in Step 4 instead.
Step 3 — Connect to Your Reel
- Open the LSM BSR app
- If this is your first time, tap Scan to find your reel — it should appear as WARLORD-BLE
- Tap your reel to connect — a green indicator confirms the connection
- Wait a few seconds for live telemetry to appear (speed, voltage, line out)
Tip: If your reel doesn't show up, make sure Bluetooth is on, the reel is powered, and you're within range. Pull down on the scanner screen to refresh.
The Reels tab — connected reel showing live telemetry. The Import button (down arrow) appears at the top right.
Step 4 — Update Your Reel
The .lsmpkg bundle is a single drop-in file. Once imported the app stages it; tapping Update applies it. The progress bar will move through several stages as different parts of the reel are programmed — just wait for the green tick.
Already opened the bundle in Step 2? Skip straight to point 4. The bundle banner is already showing at the top of the Reels tab
- If you didn't open the bundle in Step 2: on the Reels tab, tap the Import button (down-arrow icon) at the top right of the screen
- Navigate to the .lsmpkg file in your Downloads folder and tap it
- The app will load the file and show a firmware banner at the top with the bundle name and version
- Every connected reel will now show an Update button on its card
- Tap Update on the reel you want to flash
- Watch the progress bar — the full update typically takes 3–6 minutes and runs through several stages automatically. The reel may briefly disconnect partway through; the app will reconnect on its own.
- When you see a green tick next to the reel, the update is complete
After import, the bundle shows in a banner at the top (with pills for each included component) and a blue Update button appears on each connected reel's card. Tap Update once per reel — the app handles the rest.
Multi-reel update: If you have several reels connected at once, the loaded bundle applies to all of them. Tap each reel's Update button in turn — the app keeps the chains independent.
During any firmware update, do not:
- Close the LSM BSR app
- Lock your iPhone for an extended period
- Move out of Bluetooth range
- Power off the reel
Step 5 — Confirm the Update
Once the update finishes the app shows a green ✓ Update Complete panel with the new firmware versions. The panel stays visible for about 8 seconds — that's your confirmation. The new versions remain shown as small pills at the top of the expanded card after the panel fades.
- Watch the reel's card for the green ✓ Update Complete panel
- Note the new Reel v… and BLE v… pills at the top of the expanded card
- Test basic functions: manual run, auto, line readings
Want more detail? Tap the Reel Info button at the bottom of the expanded card to see the full device info screen (BLE firmware, app firmware, motor type, hardware revision, etc.).
Auto-Update on Connect
If Auto-Update on Connect is enabled in Settings, the app will automatically apply the
imported bundle the next time you connect to a reel — no need to tap Update manually.
To enable or disable:
- Open the Settings tab
- Find the DFU section
- Toggle Auto-Update on Connect
The Settings tab — Auto-Update on Connect, DFU logging, and distance unit preferences.
Troubleshooting
Update fails partway through
- Move closer to the reel and try again
- Power-cycle the reel
- Close and reopen the LSM BSR app
- Retry the update — the app supports resume in many cases
Reel won't connect after update
- Wait 30 seconds, then try connecting again
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in iPhone Settings
- Restart the reel
"Firmware version too old" error
- The reel only accepts firmware newer than what's currently installed (no downgrades)
- Contact Lone Star Marine for the correct firmware version
Bundle won't open in LSM BSR from the Files app
- Make sure the LSM BSR app is installed and has been opened at least once
- Try tapping the file directly in Safari's Downloads list instead
Diagnosing connection problems
If support asks for more detail, you can open the in-app debug console to capture live BLE traffic and share the log via email.
